Premier League Final Day TV Coverage 2011 / 2012

After nearly 9 months of twists, turns, shocks and surprises, the 2011 / 2012 Premier League season draws to an end on Sunday.

Only 2 games will be shown on the final day with Sky Sports opting to show the “champions elect” Man City at home to relegation threatened QPR and Man Utd’s away trip to Sunderland.

This means that the race for the Champions League spots will not be covered live and neither will Bolton’s vital trip to Stoke where the Trotters must win to have any chance of Premier League survival.

ESPN used up their allocation of 23 live games after showing Norwich v Liverpool 2 weeks ago, which seems a ridiculous decision considering there is so much to play for on the final day of the season. Sky could have easily held back another game for the final day of the season, however there is always the risk of being left with a dead-rubber.

I believe it is now the right time for the Premier League to allow all games played on the last day of the season to be shown live.

Premier League TV Rights 2013/2014 – 2015/2016 Go To Tender

On Thursday evening, the Premier League invited interested companies to tender their bids for Premier League TV rights for 2013/2014 – 2015/2016 seasons.

154 live games will be shown each season, an increase of 16 games a season on the current limit of 138. These 154 games will be split into 5 packages of 26 games and 2 packages of 12 matches. No single bidder will be allowed to win more than 116 live games.

These additional 16 games will be made up of games moved for policing reasons or due to European commitments. The Premier League says that “this creates a more attractive and compelling offering for both broadcasters and fans; whilst allowing the continued protection of the Saturday 3pm ‘closed window’ and minimising further displacement of Premier League fixtures”.

It is likely that the Premier League has created these packages to satisfy ESPN’s demands of expanding their current output of 23 games, whilst allowing Sky to maintain their 100+ live games a season.

Other packages going out to tender are:

  • Free-To-Air television highlights including “catch up rights”.
  • 2 packages of 226 near live games, one for “linear” coverage and one for “on-demand”  coverage.
  • An Internet based clips package for all 380 matches.
